PRETTY IN THE FACE
USA, 2006, 93 MINS
DIRECTED BY NATE MEYER
East Coast Premiere/2nd US Showing
At 26 years old, Maggie has a great full time job at a pottery shop, lives with her less than average but loving boyfriend, and is blessed with two very local and loving parents. All the same, she's soundly disheartened by an overpowering sense of inadequacy. The same for Daniel, 14 years of age, who's insecure about his obesity and worries he's intended for the same destiny. When Daniel's overweight mother falls sick in the hospital, and Maggie's boyfriend is cheating on her with one of his band mates, the two embark on an unlikely friendship and help each other distinguish the ways they sabotage their potential. In Nate Meyer's directorial debut, Pretty in the Face, his "in your face" filmmaking style features a handheld camera, brilliant dialogue, and a fantastic ensemble cast of no names. These commendable traits, along with the film's honesty and extremely talented performances, make this drama one of the true indie discoveries of the year.
