This searing film recounts events surrounding the infamous Scottsboro Trial of 1931, in which nine black men in Alabama were accused of raping two young white women. Despite inadequate and inconsistent testimonies from the two women, the men were sentenced to death. News of their convictions spread, forcing an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Oscar-winning actor Timothy Hutton portrays famed New York lawyer Samuel Leibowitz, who was asked to reopen the case by the International Labor Defense and defend the men in a re-trial. Upon his arrival in the Deep South, Liebowitz finds both he and the defendants caught up in a web of blind prejudice and hate. The landmark trials that followed dramatically changed the lives of Liebowitz and Judge James Horton (Oscar nominee David Strathairn)--who are forever tied to the event and its legacy--as well as the course of American jurisprudence. This tragic and compelling story, with its outstanding ensemble cast including LeeLee Sobieski, Anthony Mackie, Bill Sage, and Maury Chaykin, creates a vivid document of the volatility of life in the segregated South.
