MUSKRAT LOVELY
USA, 2005, 57 MIN
DIRECTED BY AMY NICHOLSON
SOUTHEAST PREMIERE
While broad national support for the Miss America contest flounders, the 50th annual crowning of “Miss Outdoors” thrives in Golden Hill, Maryland, and is the subject of this wildly entertaining and remarkably tender film. Granted, the Miss Outdoors contest has an advantage: it exists side-by-side with another annual competition—a gathering of the world’s best muskrat skinners to see who can skin the fastest. These competitions may seem like unlikely bedfellows; however, opportunities for glamour are few in this close-knit Chesapeake Bay community, and the residents bring genuine celebration and humor to their yearly fete. You may even find yourself wanting to cheer for your favorite beauty contestant (perhaps the one with the knife) in Nicholson’s well-observed small slice of Americana, filmed entirely in Dorchester County, home of The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and a couple of unlucky muskrats. Miss America, take note!
CITY OF MERMAIDS
USA, 2005, 16 MIN
DIRECTED BY LEAH WOLCHOK
SOUTHEAST PREMIERE
A romantic albeit aging Florida roadside attraction, Weeki Wachee still bubbles with mermaids and kitsch. Long before Disney arrived, the denizens of the deep spring created their own “magic kingdom.”
