HAND OF GOD
USA, 2005, 96 MIN
DIRECTED BY JOE CULTRERA
EAST COAST PREMIERE
Deeply rooted in the details of growing up in a devout Italian Catholic family in Salem, Massachusetts, HAND OF GOD is both a personal film about one family's response to abuse by the clergy and a powerful indictment of their Church. In 1964 filmmaker Joe Cultrera's older brother, Paul, was sexually abused by a priest. What followed were 30 years of silence as Paul grew from potential priest to relentless investigator and critic. In this movie Paul and his brother peel away the layers of blind faith to uncover the truth. Unique and provocative, HAND OF GOD is both narratively and visually compelling. This movie is about sexual abuse, lies, and the abuse of power, but it is also about a family's love and how they regain their footing as the institutional Church crumbles around them.
