BEYOND CONCEPTION: MEN HAVING BABIES
USA, 2005, 75 MIN
DIRECTED BY JOHNNY SYMONS
WORLD PREMIERE
Oh brave new rainbow-colored world! Just when you thought you knew everything there was to know about getting in the family way, here’s another twist. Gay men on a mission, feisty lesbians with opinions, lots of money, donated eggs, sperm, uteri (or is it uteruses), surrogate contracts. And let’s not forget love and romance. Just make sure they’re separate from the actual act of conception. The maker of Daddy & Papa (FFF 2002) delves even deeper into the sensitive but nonetheless sweet world of people who can’t have children biologically and who opt for technology instead. Through an extraordinarily intimate lens, we see the hopes and dreams that baby fever generates. The future is certainly all about children, but this film begs the question, “What is the future of the family?”
