STEAL ME
USA, 2005, 95 MIN
DIRECTED BY MELISSA PAINTER
SOUTHEAST PREMIERE
Jake committed his first theft at the age of three and, by 15, can proudly claim, “You name it, I’ve robbed it.” As a homeless thief in search of his prostitute mom, his life couldn’t be more different than that of Tucker, a fresh-faced farm kid who catches Jake breaking into his car and invites him into his family. Tucker, for example, is painfully shy with a teenage girl he has a crush on, while Jake has no trouble charming his way into the arms of an older woman. Jake's unique perspective on the intimacy of theft, plus his high wire act between maturity and need for the real, stable home Tucker’s family represents combine to make an unforgettable character portrait. Set in the overwhelmingly clear, fresh space of Montana, with a soundtrack by the Mermen’s Jim Thomas, writer/director Melissa Painter shrewdly captures dizzying contradictions of adolescence in this surprising and superbly acted rural drama.
