THE PUFFY CHAIR
USA, 2005, 85 MIN
DIRECTED BY JAY DUPLASS
FLORIDA PREMIERE
A recliner is supposed to be relaxing. Not so for Josh, who finds a perfect purple armchair on eBay and decides to take it to his dad as a birthday gift. He extends a guilt-induced invitation for this road trip to long-time girlfriend Emily; nouveau-hippie brother Rhett invites himself. At the end of this road, by turns hilarious and wince-provoking, the trio is in a very different place . . . and not just geographically. Jay and Mark Duplass deliver a surprising, funny, and scathing first feature which hits so squarely on the most awkward moments of relationships you may feel you’ve starred in some of these scenes. Shot in a documentary style that makes the viewer feel like an eavesdropper on a bad family vacation, THE PUFFY CHAIR (a 2005 Sundance selection and nominee for the John Cassavetes Award at the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards) smartly revitalizes the relationship and road genres with tart wit, unblinking honesty, and brilliant comic instinct.
