IN MEMORY OF MY FATHER
USA, 2005, 96 MIN
DIRECTED BY CHRISTOPHER JAYMES
A legendary Hollywood producer dies, prompting his filmmaker son to document a day in the death of the father and the life of the sons and lovers around him. That's the intriguing premise of writer/director Christopher Jaymes's Dogme 95-style feature debut, in which he takes the age-old concept of the family reunion and spins it on its ear, giving new meaning and insight to the terms "dysfunctional" and "family values." Jaymes uncovers a fascinating array of lonely, frustrated people trapped in failed relationships, who use this day to escape into a drug-drenched sexual roundelay only to have their scars peeled away and wounds exposed, as painful truths give way to new awareness. With corrosive drama spiced with sardonic humor, sharp dialogue and complex characters played by a brilliant ensemble cast led by Jeremy Sisto and Judy Greer, Jaymes carves a deserving place in the terrain of Altman and Cassavetes, and delivers a brutally honest, fiendishly entertaining film.
