FLORIDA PREMIERE
Director Anthony Ng came to the Florida Film Festival in 2001 with the catchy-titled short “...” (dot dot dot). This single story was recast, reshot, and joined by two other tales, leading to a the full-length feature 212, an intricate romantic comedy with a bittersweet grasp of the awkwardness, frustration, and thrills of love, set in the country’s most famous area code. In three stories of intertwined lives, a broken watch leads a travel agent on a uniquely obsessive journey, a copy shop clerk fixes her love life through broken machines, and a photo processor is smitten by a girl in an unclaimed picture. A native of Hong Kong and a New Yorker for nine years, Ng touchingly captures the emptiness of isolation in a packed city and shows how, sometimes, it’s easier to connect from across the world than across room. This 2005 Sundance feature depicts the ability of romance to overcome obstacles posed by language, nerves, and even New York City.
