HOOT
USA, 2006, 90 MIN, RATED PG
DIRECTED BY WIL SHRINER
REGIONAL PREMIERE
Three middle-schoolers take on greedy land developers, corrupt politicians, and clueless cops in the mystery adventure HOOT, based on Carl Hiaasen’s Newbery Honor-winning book. Produced by Jimmy Buffett, Frank Marshall (Seabiscuit, Raiders of the Lost Ark), and Walden Media (The Chronicles of Narnia, Holes), this family comedy with a conscience revolves around a Montana boy who moves to Florida and unearths a disturbing threat to a local population of endangered owls. Determined to protect his new environment, the boy and his friends fight to prevent the adults from making a big mistake. Packed with surprising plot twists, quirky characters, and offbeat humor, HOOT is a classic story that’s fun for all ages. Former actor and comedian-turned-director Wil Shriner (TV’s Frasier, Becker, Everybody Loves Raymond) wrote the screenplay from the acclaimed novel and directed the fine young cast, including Logan Lerman, Brie Larson, and Cody Linley, along with supporting turns from Luke Wilson, Jimmy Buffett, Tim Blake Nelson, Clark Gregg, and Robert Wagner. Buffett also contributes original music to the film’s score.
