NIGHTS OF CABIRIA
ITALY, 1957, 117 MIN, B&W
DIRECTED BY FEDERICO FELLINI
IN ITALIAN W/ ENGLISH SUBTITLES
On the eve of its 50th anniversary, the Florida Film Festival proudly presents the glorious reissue of one of Fellini’s early masterworks, NIGHTS OF CABIRIA. This Oscar-winning chronicle of a saintly prostitute searching for love and fulfillment is one of the most important and popular masterpieces of the European art-film renaissance, and later became the basis for the hit musical, Sweet Charity. Its raffish beauty can be appreciated as never before in this fully restored version which greatly improves the murky quality of previous American-release prints, replaces the incomplete and inaccurate subtitles with a completely new translation, and includes a crucial never-before-seen episode, reportedly cut under pressure from the Church. Perhaps Fellini’s most emotionally powerful film, it takes the viewer on a roller coaster ride from hope to despair and back again. The gutsy yet gullible heroine is incarnated by Giuletta Masina in a legendary performance that combines the comic pathos of Chaplin’s tramp with the earthy vitality of Anna Magnani, and won her Best Actress at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival.
