WAH-WAH
UK/SOUTH AFRICA/FRANCE, 2005, 97 MIN, RATED R
DIRECTED BY RICHARD E. GRANT
SOUTHEAST PREMIERE
WAH-WAH is Richard E. Grant’s semi-autobiographical look at isolation in a world of change. Set in 1969 Swaziland, South East Africa, during the last days of the British Empire, the story unfolds the delicate layers of a Colonial community isolated from the world at large and individuals isolated from each other. Young Ralph is forced to bear witness to his mother’s adultery and his father’s alcoholism as he tries to find his own identity in a cloistered community. His damaged parents, played penetratingly by Miranda Richardson and Gabriel Byrne, struggle to walk the line of propriety and happiness. It is not until Ralph returns from boarding school to find his father re-married to an energetic ex-air hostess (Emily Watson) who breaks all the rules and attends a life-changing screening of A Clockwork Orange that he finally begins to emerge from the “wah-wah” noise of Colonial life. A wonderful cast and heartfelt storytelling make WAH-WAH a charming, unforgettable film and a most impressive directorial debut for famed British actor Richard E. Grant.
