LOVERBOY
USA, 2005, 86 MIN
DIRECTED BY KEVIN BACON
Can a mother love her child too much? That's the question director Kevin Bacon tackles in this drama starring his wife, Kyra Sedgwick. Sedgwick plays Emily Stoll, a beautiful, financially secure single woman who wants just one thing in her lifeāthe unconditional love of her own child. To Emily, men are only of interest as breeding partners, and she tries out many on the path to her son Paul, who's conceived after an encounter with a traveling businessman (Campbell Scott). Paul becomes the "man" in Emily's life and the center of her universe, so much so that she bestows upon him the nickname Loverboy. Emily and her Loverboy move to an ideal home in an idyllic town where Paul can be home schooled and raised to his mother's exacting specifications. But real life is never as tidy as desired, and as Paul reaches school age, his natural curiosity draws him to the outside world. Emily finds herself at an uncomfortable crossroads, struggling to keep their magical world intact. Bacon's provocative film, based on a novel by Victoria Redel, explores the challenges and fantasies of single parenthood while exposing the clash that comes when self-love is confused with motherly love. An extraordinary ensemble cast including Marisa Tomei, Matt Dillon, Oliver Platt, Sandra Bullock, and Bacon himself co-stars.
