LADY VENGEANCE
SOUTH KOREA, 2005, 112 MIN, RATED R
DIRECTED BY PARK CHAN-WOOK
IN KOREAN W/ ENGLISH SUBTITLES
EAST COAST PREMIERE
Thirteen years in prison is a long time to live out a sentence, especially an unjustified one. The very angelic Lee Geum-ja (Lee Yeong-ae) is finally released after being falsely framed for the kidnapping and killing of a six year-old boy. Vengeance is in order, and South Korean auteur Park Chan-Wook knows how to deliver it on a silver platter in the final installment of his provocative “Vengeance Trilogy” (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance). Separated from her baby daughter during her incarceration, Geum-ja must make amends while enacting her vindictive plan to destroy the former teacher who betrayed her, slaughtered her innocence, and perpetrated indescribable terror on others. Park Chan-Wook’s legions of fans are no strangers to his artistic and action-packed predilection for savage revenge themes, but they may be surprised at the elegance, visual poetry, and unexpected humor summoned in this female-centered narrative (reminiscent of Kill Bill) as well as the transcendent performance by the celestial Yeong-ae. If it’s vengeance you seek, then Park assures you in this climactic chapter, vengeance you shall receive.
