FRIENDS WITH MONEY
USA, 2006, 87 MIN
DIRECTED BY NICOLE HOLOFCENER
Sometimes life fails to turn out as planned. Even worse, sometimes it does. The latest feature from writer/director Nicole Holofcener (Walking and Talking, Lovely and Amazing) examines a group of best friends in Los Angeles as they struggle with the wants, needs, perceptions, and judgments that define middle-aged womanhood in the modern world. A stellar cast of actresses is the hallmark of any Holofcener film, and this one features the marvelous ensemble of Jennifer Aniston, Catherine Keener, Frances McDormand, and Joan Cusack. Backed by a strong supporting male cast as well, this brutally honest and painfully hilarious portrayal of the day-to-day existence in and around white upper-middle class society may cause slight discomfort for those who find it hitting too close to home. Wonderful performances and a witty, authentic, and carefully crafted script make FRIENDS WITH MONEY a funny and poignant testament to the truth that friendships are often complicated, irritating, and absolutely necessary.
