DOWN IN THE VALLEY
USA, 2005, 114 MIN
DIRECTD BY DAVID JACOBSON
EAST COAST PREMIERE/2ND US SHOWING
Set on the outskirts of Los Angeles' suburban sprawl, DOWN THE VALLEY is the tale of Tobe (Evan Rachel Wood, Thirteen), a bored 18-year-old girl whose aimless existence is turned upside down by a chance encounter with Harlan Carruthers (Ed Norton, American History X), a charismatic cowboy with a murky past. Tobe is drawn to Harlan's poetic charm and romantic spirit, while he sees her as embodying an innocence and purity otherwise impossible for a modern cowboy to find on LA's mean streets. Despite differences in their ages and the suspicions of Tobe's father, the Sheriff, the pair pursues a passionate, furtive romance until the intensity of Harlan's love becomes uncomfortable and Tobe discovers he's not at all who he appears to be. Director David Jacobson (Dahmer) nurtures remarkable performances from Norton and Wood while casting L.A. as the locus of both hopeful reinvention and dark violence. His striking contemplation of Western myths, disappointed dreams and cinematic illusion is a hugely ambitious and breathtaking American independent epic.
