LOOK BOTH WAYS
AUSTRALIA, 2005, 100 MIN
DIRECTED BY SARAH WATT
SOUTHEAST PREMIERE
With death coming at her from every direction, Meryl (Justine Clarke) imagines it manifesting in a host of unusual ways through whimsical animated daydreams of muggings, shark attacks, and train crashes. On her way home from her father’s funeral, she witnesses a man hit by a train, which leads her to meeting Nick (William McInnes), a newspaper photographer, who earlier that morning, was diagnosed with a spreading cancer. Following another chance meeting, Nick and Meryl embark on one steamy weekend together—leading to adventure, discovery, and insights only available to those who have a heightened sense of their own mortality. Sarah Watts, in her award-wining feature debut as writer/director/animator, creates a unique and energetic vision of life, death, and the quality of both. Exciting animation, post-mod Run Lola Run-style multimedia editing, and a quirky and unusual script summon a new and unforgettable vision of the shimmering borders to an “undiscovered country.” The thought-provoking comedy of LOOK BOTH WAYS heralds a distinctive new voice in cinema from Down Under.
