THE HOUSE OF SAND (CASA DE AREIA)
BRAZIL, 2005, 115 MIN
DIRECTED BY ANDRUCHA WADDINGTON
IN PORTUGUESE W/ ENGLISH SUBTITLES
EAST COAST PREMIERE/2ND US SHOWING
THE HOUSE OF SAND brings together for the first time two of Brazil’s most celebrated actresses. Academy Award nominee Fernanda Montenegro (Central Station) and Cannes Palme d’Or winner Fernanda Torres shine in this magnificent, epic drama about the lives and passions of three generations of women struggling to find their place amidst the tough, inhospitable sand dunes of northern Brazil. The saga begins in 1910, when Aurea arrives by caravan with her insane husband, Vasco, who believes the barren land of Maranhao can be profitably farmed. Calamity hits, and she is left pregnant and alone in the desert with her mother, Maria. They eventually find food and friendship through Massu (Seu Jorge, The Life Aquatic), and as the years pass, it is Aurea’s promiscuous daughter who has inherited her mother’s lust for the world beyond the dunes. Director Andrucha Waddington (Me, You ,Them), one of the most exciting filmmakers in Brazil today, artfully incorporates seminal moments of human history into his profound narrative, and the relentless passage of time and the strength of Mother Nature are beautifully captured in this powerful film.
