BLACK SUN
UK, 2005, 70 MIN
DIRECTED BY GARY TARN
Hugues de Montalembert was a French painter and filmmaker until one night in 1978 when he was violently mugged in his New York apartment. While in the hospital, his failing vision finally leaves him altogether, and he finds the rehabilitation process difficult but remains remarkably positive. The engaging de Montalembert, a 36-year-old world traveler, is told getting on a plane and traveling to exotic and remote locations is no longer feasible given his current condition. Ignoring all of the medical advice, he determines that his brain must still process images, and the artist hops a flight to Indonesia, finds a way to compose a book, and regains his independence. Composer and filmmaker Gary Tarn takes the notion that de Montalembert continued to make films in his mind, and spins it into a fluidly impressionistic flow of imagery from all over the world. His subject’s captivating storytelling combines with these extraordinary visuals and tremendously effective musical score to create a unique and powerful cinematic experience. Blindness is often depicted in movies—but rarely with the pragmatism, poetry, and truth of BLACK SUN.
