An endearing, bittersweet look at a teenaged boy who faces adversity in the name of family, SAINT RALPH highlights the angst of adolescence and the strength of faith in an unusual coming-of-age comedy. Ralph Walker (captivating newcomer Adam Butcher) is a ninth-grade Catholic school student in 1954 whose father was killed in the War and whose mother is sick in the hospital. A skinny, awkward troublemaker, he rebels against the church. Nevertheless, when his mother lapses into a coma, Ralph becomes dead set on performing a miracle to save her. His miracle? Running in and winning the 1954 Boston Marathon with no experience and little athletic ability. Despite his troubled reputation at school, Ralph finds mentorship in Father Hibbert (the always terrific Campbell Scott) and emotional support from his mom’s nurse (Jennifer Tilly). With a compelling cast of characters in the small-town setting of 1950s Hamilton, Ontario, writer/director Michael McGowan (My Dog Vincent, FFF 1998) smartly crafts a funny and heartwarming story that engages the audience with its sensitivity and honesty.
