Think rebellious youth are a problem in today’s society? What about those original nonconformists from 50 years ago? Greased hair, cuffed jeans, and a leather jacket all deemed you an outsider in the 1950s, and during that time period, James Dean led the pack. The Florida Film Festival pays tribute to Dean’s most famous role in Nicholas Ray’s masterful film adaptation of REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, this year’s Festival Popcorn Flick, just in time for the film’s 50th anniversary. Dean plays Jim Stark, a troubled youth looking for his place in the world, who rebels against his family and the norms of society. His behavior sends him to a new town with a new set of troubles and confrontations. Stark finds solitude only among his tag-along friend Plato (Sal Mineo) and his love interest Judy, played by Natalie Wood. Both these extraordinary performances earned Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor/Actress in 1956.
