DIRECTED BY LORI SILVERBUSH AND MICHAEL SKOLNIK
EAST COAST PREMIERE
Watching ON THE OUTS occasionally feels like peering into the lives of real people, and in a sense, that’s absolutely true. Filmmakers Lori Silverbush (director of the award-winning Mental Hygiene) and Michael Skolnik (producer of Heir to an Execution) teach artistic self-expression to girls in a New Jersey detention center. The girls’ stories became the basis for this remarkable drama, an ultra-realistic portrait of inner-city girls headed for juvenile hall: 15-year-old Suzette (Anny Mariano), a good girl with a bad crush; Marisol (film cocreator Paola Mendoza), 17, crack addicted, and fighting both her demons and uncompromising foster care to keep her child; and Oz (Judy Marte, Raising Victor Vargas), a moral drug dealer and second mother to her mentally challenged brother. ON THE OUTS owes its raw quality to these astonishing actresses, whose vulnerability and honesty make a compelling story spellbinding. Nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards; winner of Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the 2005 Slamdance Film Festival.
