BOXERS AND BALLERINAS beautifully weaves together the struggles of four Cuban and Cuban-American artists and athletes. Directed by Brit Marling, who grew up in Central Florida, this poetic documentary captures the shared cultural heritage of Miami and Havana, long divided by 90 miles of water and 40 years of political conflict. Participants struggle with the meaning of freedom, conflicting measures of success, and the challenges of defection. One boxer notes that his Gold Medal earned him a red bicycle from the proud Cuban government, and his subsequent decision to defect to the United States earned him a Rolls-Royce before he even entered the ring. As documented here, these two worlds’ violent political conflicts often eclipse the individual triumphs and failures of those who struggle to achieve universal heights of greatness. Visually haunting and emotionally raw, this profound film gives life to a new voice in the four-decade battle that is U.S.–Cuban relations.
