USA, 2008, 111 Mins, Rated R Directed by GUILLERMO ARRIAGA In English and Spanish with English subtitles Southeast Premiere |
Academy Award-nominee Guillermo Arriaga, the innovative screenwriter of Alejandro Gonzalez-Inarritu's masterworks Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel, and Tommy Lee Jones' The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, takes the full directing helm in this emotionally gripping tale of forbidden love and tormented past. The film tactfully bounds between past and present storylines surrounding a broken and confused Sylvia (Oscar-winner Charlize Theron) as she attempts to suppress events from her teenage years in a Mexican border town that haunt her adult life. Sylvia's story is intertwined with compelling characters, all of whom are wrestling with their own romantic desires including a passionate, illicit love affair between Gina (Oscar-winner Kim Basinger) and Nick (Joaquim de Almeida, Che). Collaborating with the incredible cinematography by Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood), Arriaga succeeds in crafting a superb example of cinematic expression. The way he observes and bonds his characters reveal a director pursuing far more than just style, making this powerful drama nothing less than a high priority.
