Say the words "Up with People" and uncertain smiles appear. Weren't those the no-sex, no-drugs, cheerful, mom-and-apple-pie kids? Weren't they the antidote, the silent majority's response to those Haight-Ashbury hippie kids of the '60s and '70s? But every yin has its yang, and this startlingly comprehensive film shows us the surprisingly idealistic roots and subsequent unsavory behind-the-scenes operations and operatives of the quintessential America-love-it-or-leave-it front people. Filmmaker Lee Storey has crafted a multi-layered, must-see story about this iconic, toothy-grinned phenomenon. We meet Up with People's founders, proselytizing God-driven ideologues devoted to the "moral rearmament" of the world. Over time power-hungry leaders, money, and politics morphed the organization into a propagandistic tool for conservative values. Heartfelt interviews with dozens of singers reveal idealism as well as disillusionment and betrayal. The group spanned 40 years and reached 20 million people in 3600 places worldwide, including four Super Bowls and the White House, and produced only one member who went on to legitimate stardom--Glenn Close. Archival footage doesn't get much better (or more entertaining) than this! Preceded by

"Some of the gooder music you'll ever hear," sums up this slice-of-rural-life in the storeroom of a North Carolina hair cuttery. It's a bluegrass barbershop mullet-business in the front and party in the back. The ebb and flow of the generations and the jam are what American music is based on. It makes them smile, and you will too.
