school play.jpgIn the totally charming SCHOOL PLAY, the everyday drama and disappointments of pre-teen life are captured through the lens of a 5th grade production in upstate New York of The Wizard of Oz.  Will the kids audition?  Will they get the part?  Will they remember their lines?  The five children followed through the film are us, including (of course) the fat kid, the class clown, and the stutterer, who are all part of this multi-dimensional mix.    The interior lives of these 'tweens are as complex and chaotic as any adults, except adults are rarely so honest or so vulnerable in their musings. Their dreams, ambitions, and glory are every bit as thrilling as any Pulitzer prize-winning novel or afternoon soap opera. Again and again the power of art to transform and illuminate life is confirmed. You will leave this amusing and enlightening play-within-a-play piece of filmmaking transformed yourself.
